Pakistan begin Mike Hesson era with a win against Bangladesh as Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan shine

Pakistan begin Mike Hesson era with a win against Bangladesh as Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan shine

Pakistan didn’t have the best of the starts losing a couple of wickets in the first two overs before Salman Agha, Mohammad Haris and Shadab Khan led the fightback and bowlers put on a show in Lahore for the hosts to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against Bangladesh. Lahore: Pakistan overcame a difficult start to tighten screws over Bangladesh with both bat and ball to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series on the back of all-round effort in the opening game at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday, May 28. The captain and vice-captain, Salman Agha and Shadab Khan, combined to push Pakistan’s score beyond 200 before Hasan Ali stuck in and registered his maiden five-wicket haul as Bangladesh lost the steam after gaining an early advantage. It was an abhorrent start for Pakistan, losing both their dashers, Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman and the danger of the same old story repeating itself was very evident. The repair job from Salaman Agha was cautious but Mohammad Haris played his shots. His innings didn’t last long, but the 18-ball 31 eventually became a bridge between the start and the eventual acceleration. Agha smashed an outstanding fifty and Hasan Nawaz and Shadab Khan contributed crucial 40s at near-200 strike rates to take care of the latter overs. Pakistan were really severe on the leggie Rishad Hossain as he ended up conceding 55 runs off his last four overs.  A six from Faheem Ashraf in the end took Pakistan to the psychological 200-number and Bangladesh had their task cut out. Jaker Ali, captain Litton Das and opener Tanzid Hasan tried adding life to Bangladesh’s innings, but the regular wickets didn’t help the innings’ flow for Bangladesh. Whenever the Bangladesh batters tried to up the ante, they would lose a wicket at the other end. Falling wickets disrupted momentum for the visitors multiple times as Hasan Ali, fresh off a sensational PSL for Karachi Kings, ran riot to register his maiden five-wicket haul and Bangladesh ended up 37 runs short of the target. It was a winning start for Mike Hesson and Co in his first game of the new assignment as Pakistan’s white-ball coach and he would be keen to sweep Bangladesh with bigger and tougher challengers to come. For Pakistan, the change in personnel and the belief in the ones doing well in the PSL seems to be working but the team management and the selectors need to trust and give time to the new captain and this squad to be able to function fully, come the T20 World Cup next year.   Source link

PBKS hope to reap home advantage despite Kohli in rival camp

PBKS hope to reap home advantage despite Kohli in rival camp

Chandigarh: Like any other team in the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings should be happy to be playing Qualifier 1 at home in Mullanpur. Local conditions do matter, and though PBKS have two wins and losses each in Mullanpur, the team management will be happy playing here. Punjab Kings, who will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 on Thursday, have reached the IPL playoffs after 11 years. (PTI) Unless of course the Virat Kohli factor comes into play and the Punjab fans come dressed in RCB shirts and cheer for Kohli. PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh is conscious of that possibility as he appealed to the Punjab fans to support the home team on Thursday. The PBKS-RCB game in Mullanpur last month saw spectators vocally supporting RCB and Virat. Some even jeered a few PBKS players and their families. PBKS have reached the playoffs after 11 years. They will be playing in Mullanpur after 38 days and would want a pitch with extra bounce which their tall fast bowlers can exploit. They have had a great momentum throughout the tournament with the Shreyas Iyer-Ricky Ponting partnership lifting a franchise that had struggled in the last decade. Ponting though says the job is only half done. Speaking to the broadcaster after Monday’s win over Mumbai Indians in the last league game, Ponting said, “We have not achieved anything yet” with the “big games” still to come. “A lot of hard work goes into being able to achieve something like this as a team. It is pretty obvious that this is a really talented team that are all on the same page. It’s a great achievement till now, but really, if you look back, we’ve not achieved anything yet. That’s the one thing I have been saying to the players since the moment we qualified.” Ponting and Shreyas renewed their partnership in PBKS this season having worked together in Delhi Capitals and it has clicked. “The vision for me was always to finish in the top two, and we have got there now. It is a really happy group and we have enjoyed our time in each other’s company for the last ten weeks, but we have got another week to go,” said Ponting with an eye on winning a maiden IPL trophy. This could be the best chance for PBKS considering their performances with domestic cricketers making a mark. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and rookie Priyansh Arya have laid the platform for Iyer and Josh Inglis to build on. Shashank Singh continues to improve as a finisher, while Marcus Stoinis and Nehal Wadhera too have provided batting depth. The bowling has been dealt a blow with the departure of South Africa fast bowler Marco Jansen – he took 16 wickets, complementing Arshdeep (18). Jansen has left for national duty with the Proteas playing Australia in the World Test Championship final from June 11. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who missed the last two games due to a finger injury, is expected to return and team up with the accurate Harpreet Brar. It was Chahal’s four-wicket haul which helped PBKS beat KKR in a low-scoring game in Mullanpur. However, Iyer’s captaincy has provided stability in the team, the India batter delivering after being bought for a whopping ₹26.75 crore. “If you speak to the players individually, Shreyas has spent a lot of time with them. He has pumped them up, given them a pat on the back when they needed it, and given them a kick in the pants when they’ve needed it as well. That is a sign of a good and strong leader,” Ponting said. PBKS has had 16 captains before Iyer took over, and they will hope the man who led KKR to last year’s title will repeat it with them. A defeat won’t be the end of the road. The losers will play in Qualifier 2, against the winner of the Eliminator. RCB come off an impressive final league win on Tuesday against Lucknow Super Giants with Jitesh Sharma finding his touch like the other batters after his brilliant, unbeaten 85 off 33 balls. EXCLUSIVE: ‘These successes are for my father’ — UAE’s Haider Ali credits ILT20, coach Lalchand Rajput and family for his meteoric rise | Cricket News

EXCLUSIVE: ‘These successes are for my father’ — UAE’s Haider Ali credits ILT20, coach Lalchand Rajput and family for his meteoric rise | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Haider Ali has played just three T20 Internationals, but the 30-year-old left-arm spinner from Lahore has become the heartbeat of UAE cricket after helping his adopted nation script a historic series win over Bangladesh on May 21 in Sharjah — UAE’s first ever T20I series victory against a Test-playing nation. In an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com, a visibly emotional Haider reflected on what the milestone meant to him and dedicated his performances to the people who helped shape his journey — his family, his late father and his cricketing mentors.“I was crying when we won the series. These successes are for my family, for my village and especially for my late father who passed away last year. I haven’t met him since I came to Dubai four years ago,” Haider said. “We have struggled together. So, these successes are for all those well-wishers.”Haider, who returned sensational figures of 3 for 7 in the series decider, turned the match on its head in two Powerplay overs (2-1-2-3) that wrecked the Bangladesh top order. Earlier, in the second T20I, he held his nerve with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 15 off six balls and hitting the winning run in a dramatic 206-run chase. ‘They outplayed us tonight’: Ryan Rickelton admits as MI face Eliminator test “This is a proud moment, not just for me, but for everyone involved — the support staff, team management and Emirates Cricket Board. It feels great to perform for your team against a Test nation. Such performances stay in the memory forever,” he beamed. While Haider is just starting his international journey, he believes the foundation for UAE’s recent rise was laid in the ILT20 league and under the watchful eye of head coach Lalchand Rajput. Haider Ali ILT20 league “ILT20 gave me everything,” Haider admitted. “I was the best bowler in ILT20’s development tournament, then became the ‘Emerging Player’ in the first season. I bowled well last season too, and from there, got selected for the national team. It’s a massive platform — not only for local players but internationals too. Look at Jake Fraser-McGruk from Australia — he came, performed, and got a national call-up. In the next 2-3 years, ILT20 has the calibre to match PSL or other top leagues.“ Dubai Capitals Haider’s admiration for coach Lalchand Rajput is equally deep-rooted. “He’s played at the highest level for India, and his coaching experience is vast. Since he joined, the environment has been so positive. He never makes us feel like he’s the coach — it’s like a family. He backs fighters — players who don’t give up. I’m learning a lot from him and hope to absorb more in the future.” Haider Ali Haider’s work ethic has also played a big role in his rapid ascent. Aware of the dew factor in UAE’s night matches, he adapted in unique ways. “I fill a bucket with water, soak 30-40 balls in it and bowl with them during practice. So when the actual match happens, I feel no difference. I bowl 20-30 overs a day — because to beat a Test-playing nation, you have to go the extra mile.”He added, “My goal is clear — I’ve reached this level now and I never want to drop below. I want to leave UAE cricket better than I found it. I plan and train keeping that vision in mind.” Haider Ali His passion for batting also surfaced during the second T20I when UAE needed 29 off the final two overs. “I love batting. All bowlers do!” he laughed. “I told myself, ‘Haider, today is the day you show the world what you can do,’ and thankfully, I delivered.”Quiz: Who’s that IPL player?Haider also heaped praise on the Emirates Cricket Board. “The board is working tirelessly for the players — they’re giving us support, facilities and direction. My aim now is to help UAE qualify for the next T20 World Cup and take this team to even greater heights.”With tears of joy still fresh from UAE’s series win and ILT20 triumph with Dubai Capitals, Haider’s story is not just one of sporting success but of deep personal meaning.“I think the people in my village were happier than I was,” he smiled. “They’ve supported me so much, and this is for them. For my well-wishers, my family, and most of all — for my father. This is just the beginning.” Get IPL 2025 match schedules, squads, points table, and live scores for CSK, MI, RCB, KKR, SRH, LSG, DC, GT, PBKS, and RR. Nitish is too good not to bounce back, feels Vettori

Nitish is too good not to bounce back, feels Vettori

For Nitish Kumar Reddy, the 18th edition of the IPL has lent a first-hand experience of just how fickle the T20 format can be. At the start of this year’s summer ritual, the 22-year-old must have intended to build on his breakthrough 2024 season. In Sunrisers Hyderabad’s run to last year’s final, Nitish had been the surprise package, his quickfire knocks and a few overs of medium-pace providing Pat Cummins’ men greater depth in the two core departments. The all-round skills, in turn, helped the youngster from Andhra Pradesh get fast-tracked into India’s T20I and Test teams. And he had decent success too, notching up a maiden Test century against Australia at the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Down turn But over the last two months in the IPL, Nitish has endured a conspicuous downturn. In 13 matches this season, the middle-order batter tallied just 182 runs at 22.75. His strike rate of 118.95 was also not up to scratch. He will have to shift focus now to the five-Test tour of England, where he is part of an 18-member squad as one of two seam-bowling all-rounders alongside Shardul Thakur. SRH coach Daniel Vettori threw his weight behind Nitish. “It’s always tricky to play that role at No. 4 or 5. But we know that Nitish, when he’s at his best, builds his innings and can then capitalise at the end against pace and spin. So I think it is just one of those seasons that’s a little bit of a learning for him, but he’s too good a player not to bounce back,” the bespectacled Kiwi told reporters. With the ball, too, Nitish had a negligible presence, rolling his arm over in just the last three matches. “He brought a side-strain into the tournament, and then it was just a slow, meticulous build-up. It was purely down to injury,” Vettori revealed.

F1: Lando Norris relishes dream Monaco win as driver’s championship intensifies

F1: Lando Norris relishes dream Monaco win as driver’s championship intensifies

McLaren’s Lando Norris clinched a dream victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, May 25, converting pole position into his second win of the season and slicing Oscar Piastri’s Formula One championship lead down to just three points. The streets of Monte Carlo offered little in terms of overtaking, but that didn’t stop Norris from delivering a commanding performance. The British driver held off pressure from teammate Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to take McLaren’s first Monaco win since Lewis Hamilton in 2008. “This is what I dreamed of when I was a kid. I’ve achieved one of my dreams,” said Norris, after leading all but four cars and navigating a processional race with two mandatory pit stops. Leclerc finished second in his home race, followed by Piastri in third and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in fourth — all four drivers crossing the line in the same order they started. While the new two-stop rule added a layer of strategy, it failed to shake up the usual Monaco order. Verstappen delayed his final stop until the penultimate lap in hopes of a safety car that never arrived. “Very exciting. I was on the edge of my seat every lap,” Verstappen quipped sarcastically. “Maybe next year four stops. I could have done four stops today and still finished P4.” Norris briefly locked up at the start but held his nerve throughout. As he crossed the finish line, he exclaimed over team radio: “Monaco baby!” The win, his second of the 2025 season after triumphing in Australia, marks another milestone for Norris and further boosts McLaren’s title credentials. The team extended their advantage over Mercedes in the constructors’ standings to 172 points, with Red Bull another four behind. Dismal Day for Mercedes Mercedes endured another rough outing. George Russell served a drive-through penalty and finished 11th, while rookie Kimi Antonelli ended up 18th, the last classified finisher. “Ultimately, qualifying 14th and 15th, there was nothing you could do,” said Russell. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton salvaged fifth place, recovering two spots from a post-qualifying penalty. Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar took sixth, Haas’s Esteban Ocon was seventh, and Liam Lawson scored his first points of the season in eighth for Racing Bulls. Williams rounded out the top 10 with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz. Incidents and Retirements The race saw very few overtakes. A virtual safety car was deployed on lap one after Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto hit the tyre wall at Portier, rejoining without major damage. Antonelli’s pass on Bortoleto, possibly the only clean overtake, was one of the rare bits of action — unless Russell’s chicane-cutting move on Albon, which earned him a penalty, is counted. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly retired early after crashing into Yuki Tsunoda at the tunnel exit, citing brake failure. He nearly collided with teammate Franco Colapinto as he limped into the pits. Later, Fernando Alonso retired on lap 38 with a smoking Aston Martin, extending his scoreless streak. Published By: Kingshuk Kusari Published On: May 26, 2025 Source link

Aakash Chopra reflects on Sarfaraz Khan’s exclusion from India’s Test squad for England tour

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra took centre stage and talked about Sarfaraz Khan’s exclusion from India’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of England where both sides will lock horns across five Test matches. New Delhi: The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) took centre stage and announced Team India’s squad for the upcoming five-game Test series against England. Both sides will lock horns in the first Test from June 20, and with the squad announced, it was revealed that ace batter Shubman Gill will be the new India Test captain. The squad features the likes of KL Rahul, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and many more stars. One of the most notable misses in the squad was batter Sarfaraz Khan. The batter was picked in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 but did not get a chance in the playing XI in any of the five Tests. With his exclusion from the Test squad for the England tour, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra took centre stage and talked about how the BCCI did not provide Sarfaraz with a chance to fail and dropped him. “Sarfaraz Khan is not part of the team. You have to obviously feel for the boy. Seeing him you are saying that he might not score runs, but he hasn’t failed. Neither did you play him in the BGT nor have you kept him in the team here. You wrote the kid’s obituary without giving him a chance to fail,” Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.  “However, he is also part of the India A squad. So score runs in the side games and show what they are doing is wrong. Show that you can score runs in England as well. It is actually up to you now to prove that point,” he observed. Furthermore, Aakash Chopra talked about Karun Nair being picked in the Indian Test squad after a hiatus of seven years. “Indian cricket has given Karun Nair another chance. He is a part of the team. Only time will tell whether he will get a chance to play or not. He will be a part of the India A squad as well. Score runs and put forth a solid case for you to be included in the XI,” he said. Why Rajat Patidar Was Fined More Than Pat Cummins in IPL 2025: Full Breakdown

Posted on May 25, 2025May 25, 2025 By Kabir Khan No Comments on Why Rajat Patidar Was Fined More Than Pat Cummins in IPL 2025: Full Breakdown
Why Rajat Patidar Was Fined More Than Pat Cummins in IPL 2025: Full Breakdown

Rajat Patidar Fined More Than Pat Cummins for IPL Slow Over-Rate: Here’s Why? In a recent turn of events during IPL 2025, fans were left puzzled as Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s interim captain Rajat Patidar received a steeper fine compared to Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Pat Cummins, despite both teams being penalized for the same offense — slow over-rate. But why was Patidar fined ₹24 lakh while Cummins got away with ₹12 lakh? Here’s the full explanation. The Offense: Slow Over-Rate in IPL The IPL Code of Conduct has strict guidelines regarding over-rates to ensure matches run on time. Teams are expected to bowl their 20 overs within the stipulated 90 minutes. Any delay without valid justification results in fines, and in repeat cases, suspensions. First-Time vs Repeat Offender Under IPL regulations: Thus, Patidar’s heavier penalty was a result of the team’s repeated breach of over-rate rules, not a harsher ruling against him individually. The Bigger Picture IPL 2025 has seen a strong push to enforce match timings strictly. With tight broadcast schedules and audience engagement at stake, the BCCI has shown zero tolerance for delays. Captains, especially stand-ins like Patidar, carry the burden of leading from the front and ensuring tactical decisions do not eat into game time. It also emphasizes that the IPL holds teams accountable, not just individual leaders. Conclusion While both Cummins and Patidar were guilty of slow over-rates, the fines reflect their teams’ compliance history rather than favoritism or inconsistency in penalties. This incident serves as a reminder to all teams: every over, every minute, and every decision counts. Read more…

Shubman Gill in charge as India’s Test future takes shape | Latest News India

Shubman Gill in charge as India’s Test future takes shape | Latest News India

For most of the last decade, the Indian Test team was about Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami. They were the pillars that the team was built around and the stars the youngsters looked up to. But as the team for India’s tour of England was named on Saturday, they were all missing. Shubman Gill (AP) The transition, as they say, is well and truly upon us. A new era is beginning and it is being spearheaded by the 25-year-old Shubman Gill who was named as India’s new Test captain. The selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar said his committee was “unanimous” that Gill, who has played just 32 Tests, was the right man for the job. Gill will become the fourth youngest Indian Test captain, behind Tiger Pataudi (21 yrs), Sachin Tendulkar (23 yrs) and Kapil Dev (24 yrs). It had been building up for a while but the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have hastened the need for change and this is a leap of faith that the selectors had to take. It is also a decision that could have major repercussions on India’s Test future. “You don’t pick captains for one or two tours,” Agarkar said after chairing a selection meet at the BCCI headquarters here. “We want to invest in something that’s going to help us going forward. We’ve seen some progress over the last year or two with him. There’s no doubt that it is going to be as tough as it gets, in a five-match series in England. Maybe he will have to learn on the job a little bit.” Bumrah was Rohit’s deputy in Australia and led the team to a win in the Perth Test. But as HT reported in April, the selectors were averse to the idea of the pacer becoming a long-term captain once it became known that his body would not take the workload of too many successive Tests. “Once he was not going to be available for all the Test matches, I think he is more important to us as a player,” Agarkar said. “We want him fit. I think there is always that extra burden as a leader, managing 15–16 other people. There’s a lot that it takes out of you. We would rather have him bowling well rather than putting that extra burden on him.” The calls for change had begun when India lost the series to New Zealand at home late in 2024. It was their first defeat at home in 12 years. The campaign then started to gather even more steam when most of the senior batters struggled in Australia as India crashed to another series defeat. The point most experts made was a simple one: could youngsters have done any worse? After the losses, the selectors made up their mind to pick a young captain for the new World Test Championship cycle – beginning with the England Tests – and their plans remained unchanged despite India’s triumph in the ODI Champions Trophy under Rohit Sharma. In the past two months, the selectors had conversations with Rohit and Kohli on their future. Both retired a fortnight back, within days of each other. And just like that the combined experience of 190 matches went out of the line-up. It also means that India now has a team that features players who have grown up in the T20 era. Gill’s challenge Gill is yet to hit the high notes in Test cricket (he averages just 35), but the selectors were willing to give him their vote of confidence because of not just his potential but also because of his stable mindset. Still, Gill will need to step up as batter and hope to inspire the other youngsters in the batting group — Yashasvi Jaiswal is 23, Sai Sudharsan is 23 too, Rishabh Pant has been around for a bit but he’s 27. It’s been a while since India have sported such a youthful look in the red-ball game. “Everyone is going to be tested in England, like it was in Australia,” said Agarkar. “We are confident he has got the goods. It’s a massive transition with Rohit and Kohli not being around. It’s a new cycle, experience can only help. It is going to be tough. [But] as far as his batting is concerned, there’s no real issue.” But the youngsters sometimes like to play a different game. Pant, who has been named vice-captain, certainly does. It will be interesting to see whether Gill, as skipper, tries to rein them in or gives them the freedom to be themselves. Early results may decide how assertive he will be as skipper and for that he will also need Bumrah at his very best. India’s pace battery will be working with limited ammunition in England. In addition to Bumrah’s limited availability – he has been advised to play not more than four of the five Tests – Shami had to be left out after being ruled not ready for the rigours of Test cricket by the medical team. So, the selectors have provided six pace options that include Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Shardul Thakur and the young swing bowler Arshdeep Singh. The returning bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur will act as cover for the inexperienced Nitish Reddy, whose bowling is not as sharp. But most of all, this tour will be about Gill and youth. Beginnings can be difficult, but at the end of the day it will be the results that will count. Source link
