IPL 2025: Ishan Kishan and Pat Cummins dent RCB’s top-two hopes | Cricket News

Ishan Kishan’s impressive 94 from 48 paved the way for victory for SRH vs RCB (Image via PTI) Sunrisers Hyderabad took to the pitch on Friday knowing well that a win will not change their standing in the table. The game however, had the potential to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru solidify their claim to booking a top-two spot ahead of the playoffs.Travis Head and Abhshek Sharma opened the game for SRH, although the RCB bowling attack took their wickets before either of them could put up a dangerous score on the board.Travis Head was dismissed for 17 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Abhishek Sharma fell at 34 thanks, after being caught by Phil Salt from a Lungi Ngidi delivery. While RCB mustered confidence from their dismissals, along came Ishan Kishan to spoil the party. A man down, Kishan did spectacularly well, as he dispatched boundary after boundary in the balls that followed.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!His tailblazing 94 from just 48 deliveries changed the game for Sunrisers as they put up a massive 231 runs on the board. Besides Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verman put up brilliant cameos, adding another 50 runs in just 22 balls for SRH. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhinav Manohar and Pat Cummins also featured for SRH at the crease as they put up a total RCB had never chased before in the IPL. 232 from 120 deliveries was 206/1 against the Gujarat Titans in 2024. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep 5: Shane Watson on how IPL gave him a lifeline & his tribute to Phil Hughes RCB took to the crease with Virat Kohli and Phil Salt opening the chase. While Kohli showed intent early on with his boundaries, he was dismissed while at 43 by Harsh Dubey. His opening partner Phil Salt marhed on for a bit more, racking up 62 runs in 32 deliveries. Poll Who was the standout player for Sunrisers Hyderabad in their match against RCB? However, his dismissal by Pat Cummins, followed by the successive wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma marked the starting of RCB’s collapse. What followed was Bengaluru wickets falling like dominoes; not a single player that came in afterwards stood at the crease for more than 6 balls. With victory in sight, SRH bowlers showed no mercy to RCB.Who’s that IPL player? The Jitesh Sharma led squad was bowled out at 189, earning SRH victory by 42 runs. The win does not affect SRH’s position in the points table. They remain in 8th spot with 11 points, below Kolkata Knight Riders who have 12 in 13. As for RCB, their net run rate took a massive dive to +0.255, pushing them below Punjab Kings. Prior to the game on Friday, RCB were second, and a win would have put them closer to a top-two finish. Now, a win for PBKS and Mumbai Indians, who have 17 and 16 points respectively, will push them even more behind in the race for top-two. ENG vs ZIM: Brian Bennett smashes Zimbabwe’s fastest Test ton in 97 balls, Ben Stokes breathes fire with the ball

ENG vs ZIM: Brian Bennett smashes Zimbabwe’s fastest Test ton in 97 balls, Ben Stokes breathes fire with the ball

Zimbabwe’s 21-year-old batsman Brian Bennett created history on Friday after scoring his country’s fastest Test century during the one-off Test against England at Trent Bridge. Bennett scored his century in just 97 balls as he led Zimbabwe’s charge against England’s mammoth total of 565/6. In fact, Bennett reached the milestone during the second session of Day 2 with a hat trick of fours against England fast bowler Gus Atkinson. This was Zimbabwe’s first Test centurion in England after 25 years. Murray William Goodwin was the previous Zimbabwe batter to reach three figures in England. He scored an unbeaten 148 in 2000, incidentally at the same venue of Trent Bridge.  Stokes makes sensational return Meanwhile, England’s Test skipper has made a memorable return to Test cricket after a lengthy injury layoff. The fast-bowling all-rounder picked up two wickets in his first two overs as he put on an outswinging masterclass with the ball in the final few overs leading up to the Tea break. Leading up to the match, there were concerns about Stokes’s return to bowling, but the England captain didn’t need much time to get into rhythm. He first picked up the wicket of the dangerous Sikandar Raza with a brutal delivery. Bending into the right-hander, Stokes’s outswinging delivery found some lift from a good-length spot, and it squared Raza inside-out for a simple snick to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Watch below Movement for Stokes According to live commentary from the BBC, Stokes found 1.6° of swing and 0.8° of seam movement within his first 8 balls of his spell, which was comfortably the most movement in the air and off the pitch for any pace bowler in the Test match at that point of the game. Stokes followed up Raza’s wicket with another peach of a delivery to get Wessly Madhevere castled for a duck. After peppering Madhevere with outswing after outswing, the Zimbabwe batsman played a delivery outside the line. The ball kissed the inside edge of the bat and rattled the stumps as the Zimbabwe batsman was undone by the movement. Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad, who is on commentary duty for the Test match, said Stokes promised him that he wouldn’t bowl a spell longer than five overs as he makes his way back from surgery. He kept his promise as he bowled 3.2 overs and made a sensational impact before umpires called for Tea. While Bennet made history for Zimbabwe with a brilliant ton, the spotlight was on Stokes, who was making his much-anticipated return to Test cricket ahead of two important series. England first hosts India for five Tests starting June 20 before they embark on a gruelling Ashes series down under in Australia later this year. Source link

Reviews of Mohinder Amarnath’s Fearless and Syed Kirmani’s Stumped

Reviews of Mohinder Amarnath’s Fearless and Syed Kirmani’s Stumped

Amarnath’s journey is laid out meticulously and chronologically, chapter by chapter, from tour to tour. | Photo Credit: Getty Images Athletes are image conscious, both during their playing days and long after. Some may want to be remembered for their high skill and art, some for their nature, both pleasing and rebellious, and some for the legacy they leave behind and the many lives they touch and careers they inspire. And when athletes write memoirs, it is often a careful extension of this very image. They may be honest and forthright in their assessments of their own selves and the eras they played in and lived through, but all of it is bound by the persona that the sportspersons want to project. Two recent books by Indian cricketing legends — Fearless by Mohinder Amarnath (with Rajender Amarnath) and Stumped by Syed Kirmani (with Debashish Sengupta and Dakshesh Pathak) — lend credence to this argument. The stories, in fact, flow from the cover images. Amarnath’s is of him executing the pull without the protection of a helmet, a shot synonymous with the batter and considered among the most daring strokes. The overarching theme in the book is of his many pitched battles against deadly fast bowlers like Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Imran Khan, his many selection controversies, the machinations of the higher-ups and his multiple comebacks. Kirmani’s is a rather sedate and inexpressive photograph of him staidly waiting for the red cherry to nestle in his gloves. It seems like an ode to the book title, the tagline (Life Behind and Beyond the Twenty-Two Yards), and the sad fact that the great wicket-keeper’s time in Test whites ended two shy of 200 dismissals. Defining moments It helps that the defining moment in Amarnath’s and Kirmani’s careers is also the defining moment in India’s cricket history — the 1983 World Cup triumph. Both men capture in rich detail the victory of Kapil Dev and his band of merry men over the marauding and all-conquering West Indian side led by Clive Lloyd. But where the works diverge is in how they lead up to the success. Amarnath, admittedly, had a storied upbringing, for he was the son of independent India’s first Test captain Lala Amarnath. Fearless recounts vividly the growing up days of Amarnath junior and his two brothers (Surinder, an international cricketer, and Rajender, a First Class player) under the giant shadow of their father and his steadfast goal to make Test cricketers out of all three. Amarnath’s journey is laid out meticulously and chronologically, chapter by chapter, from tour to tour. There are also charming anecdotes from his childhood and school-cricket days that bring more than a chuckle, including the one where he escapes to Delhi from his boarding school in Jalandhar in a crowded train, hungry and with little money. Kirmani’s, in contrast, zooms. Where it takes Amarnath 254 pages to reach the seminal point of his cricketing life (the 1983 win), Kirmani arrives in 35. This is, in fact, the biggest quibble one can have with the book — along with multiple factual inaccuracies, a feature, to a lesser degree, of Fearless too — for it limits Kirmani’s retelling of his entire career to just 74 pages! The 90-odd sheets that follow are biographical accounts of the man. Surely, someone who played 88 Tests — 19 more than Amarnath — in a short span of just 10 years had more to tell? Kirmani’s is a rather sedate and inexpressive photograph of him staidly waiting for the red cherry to nestle in his gloves. | Photo Credit: Adrian Murrell A glaring miss But history informs us that as much as memoirs are dressed up and promoted as ‘tell-alls’, they are also conspicuous by their many silences. What both books lack is a compelling picture of the eras Amarnath and Kirmani played their cricket in. While the volumes are no doubt windows into their respective sporting lives, they could have also shed more light on the culture of the sport back in the day. In the aftermath of India’s 1983 World Cup win, the West Indies landed in India and blanked the hosts 3-0 in Tests (six-match series) and 5-0 in One Day Internationals as Marshall and Holding ran riot. In his six visits to the crease in Tests, Amarnath, a hero of the tour to the West Indies earlier in 1983, bagged five ducks. Lloyd’s men were in India for nearly three months. Amarnath has given it the short shrift and dedicated all of four pages out of 428. Another jarring note, quite at odds with the title of the book, is his reluctance to name players and officials whose many acts and deeds he didn’t approve of. Memoirs can also be for reflection and catharsis, and used as a tool to eventually make peace with all that happened. But Fearless and Stumped don’t necessarily offer a sense of closure, both for Amarnath and Kirmani, and the reader. Watch: Arshad Khan slips on his bowling mark, takes scary fall twice in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Titans fast bowler Arshad Khan slipped twice on his bowling mark during their match against Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday, May 22, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The first incident occurred in the second over of the match, when Arshad was handed the new ball to bowl at LSG openers Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh. On the very first delivery of his over, Arshad slipped after failing to land his back foot properly in his delivery stride. The slip caused him to fall on his left knee and then onto his left shoulder. Despite the fall, Arshad got back up and returned to complete his over. GT vs LSG, IPL 2025: Updates | Full Scorecard Courtesy: JioHotstar The second slip came on the fifth ball of the same over. This time, Arshad again lost his footing on his bowling mark, and his shoulder took the heavier impact. On both occasions, the Gujarat Titans physio rushed out to the field to assess the fast bowler. Following Arshad’s falls, the ground staff came out and applied a generous amount of sawdust to the landing area. There were no further issues reported with the pitch after that. UAE humble Bangladesh in Sharjah decider to script historic 2-1 T20I series win

UAE humble Bangladesh in Sharjah decider to script historic 2-1 T20I series win

The United Arab Emirates stunned Bangladesh, coming back from a defeat in the opening game to win the next two to register a first-ever T20I series victory over the fellow Asian rivals. The bowlers helped the UAE restrict Bangladesh to a modest 162 before the batters chased it down in the last over. Sharjah: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) scripted history in Sharjah on Wednesday evening (May 21), beating Bangladesh in a T20I series for the first time. Following a defeat in the series opener, the UAE came back into the assignment strongly with back-to-back wins in the remainder of the games to win it 2-1. After pulling off a sensational run-chase in the sophomore contest where the batters stood up for the hosts, it was the bowlers’ turn to put their hand up in the decider, which they did, restricting Bangladesh to 162. It was a star turnout from left-arm spinner Haider Ali, who scalped three wickets while conceding just seven runs in his four-over spell. Tanzid Hasan actually began with a bang for Bangladesh, scoring 40 off just 18 balls. However, the problem lied at the other end. By the time Hasan was done with his innings, he had seen four batters coming in and going out inside the powerplay. 57/5 is a difficult place to recover from and even though Jaker Ali, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam tried their best, in the absence of Mustafizur Rahman, they had to bowl out of their skins to defend that total. Shoriful actually struck early, sending back dangerous Muhammad Waseem. However, Alishan Sharafu was calm and composed and took chances when only necessary because with the target and required rate not being outrageous, he knew that he could play it safe and didn’t have to take extra risks. The strike rate may just be 144, but it did the job and if the UAE needed an extra punch, Asif Khan provided it at No 5, scoring a 26-ball 41, hitting as many as five sixes, as the hosts finished the job in the final over. Bangladesh definitely lacked the experience of Mustafizur and Taskin Ahmed, but it was the batters who were at fault in the decider as it was certainly a 180-185 pitch, if not more. Bangladesh will now travel to Pakistan for three-match T20I series, shortened by a couple of maytches. Source link

“Guys showed great fight”: Faf du Plessis backs his players following defeat against MI in IPL 2025

“Guys showed great fight”: Faf du Plessis backs his players following defeat against MI in IPL 2025

Mumbai [India], : Delhi Capitals’ skipper Faf du Plessis backed his team following the franchise’s disappointing loss against the hosts, Mumbai Indians, in the 63rd encounter of the Indian Premier League 2025. “Guys showed great fight”: Faf du Plessis backs his players following defeat against MI in IPL 2025 Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner’s three-wicket haul bundled out the visitors, Delhi Capitals, for 121 runs as the hosts registered a 59-run victory at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. With this win, Mumbai Indians became the fourth and final team to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs. The other three teams for the knockouts are Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings. Speaking on the team’s performance at the post-match presentation, Du Plessis said, “We were excellent today in the field. The guys showed great fight. The bowlers pitched up, obviously not the easiest pitch to bat on, probably made the bowlers’ job a little bit easier. But still, it’s a very strong batting line-up and I thought we were excellent and then just let it slip there in the last 2 overs. Momentum is a real thing in cricket, the way that they counter-punched to get almost 50 in the last 2 overs, all the hard work that we did for 17-18 overs … lost that momentum.” Further, the right-hand batter lauded young uncapped Indian batter Sameer Rizvi’s mindset during the chase where he scored 39 runs with the help of six fours and a six on a difficult wicket where lot of senior players failed to score runs. “Rizvi today showed some signs, he’s got some talent there. When you’re playing against a powerful team like this, you need to be at your best all the time and unfortunately for 17-18 overs we were and then the last two overs we were pretty average, With the bat, you need a good start on a surface like that and we didn’t get going at all with the bat. Sums up pretty much our season, we’ve been cold in either batting or bowling in the last 6 or 7 games,” the 40-year-old cricketer added. In the end, Du Plessis went on to say that the team missed the services of regular skipper Axar Patel and left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc in today’s game against the Mumbai-based franchise. “If you look at the way that Mitch Santner bowled, they are very similar bowlers. To bowl four overs, I think he went for around 10 runs. Axar is that kind of class bowler, an internationally proven left-arm spinner. On a wicket like that, he would have loved to bowl. Unfortunately, he was very sick the last two days. Starc is a fantastic bowler, but especially the spinner on a wicket like that is worth gold. Momentum – I am a big believer that you have to make sure that you never take it for granted. When you are on top of the wave, you’ve got to make sure you don’t lose it as quickly,” the former South African player concluded. “Fitting That We Are Bottom”: CSK Coach Stephen Fleming Spares No One At Press Conference

“Fitting That We Are Bottom”: CSK Coach Stephen Fleming Spares No One At Press Conference

In a candid admission of their pathetic run this IPL season, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming said they deserve to finish at the bottom of the table but promised to come back with “strong ideas”. One of the most consistent sides in the popular league, five-time champions CSK are set to finish last behind Rajasthan Royals to whom they lost by six wickets on Tuesday in their penultimate IPL clash this season. It is not a sight cricket fans are used to considering CSK’s tremendous success in the past. “No, we don’t obviously like being down here, but it’s not a motivation. We wanted just a good performance. We’re trying to string some performances together. The aim was two good performances (in last two matches). “Now it’ll be one good one to finish. It’s probably fitting that we’re at the bottom. We’ve played that type of cricket, so you can’t hide away from it,” Fleming said after the match. The New Zealander said they know the road ahead and failure of top-order batters has played huge role in the ordinary run. “Our order is not right at this stage, and that is something that we are always looking to reshuffle. We’ve got some strong ideas for next year, so all those facets are covered. But that hasn’t been possible this year because of the lack of runs at the top. “A lot of the batting positions are determined by how well a start we have, and then guys can fall into line. We haven’t had that. So we’ve been just patching innings up, really, rather than constructing good innings,” he explained the reason behind the wretched run. Pacer Anshul Kamboj has managed to impress this season with his pace and Fleming feels he will be a good asset for India after his selection in A side for the England tour. “His speeds have been around 138, 139 (kph). He is deceptive and the ball always seems to hit the gloves harder. His big strength is his length and he just gets the ball to wobble. You saw that today on a reasonably flat wicket and he’ll do well on that tour (of England) if he gets conditions that seam a bit and a little bit of swing. “He’ll be an absolute handful. He has got some real potential with both white and red ball. We’re happy with his development and the opportunity he has taken this year.” The former Kiwi captain also spoke highly of pacer Matheesha Pathirana but said the Lankan needs to improve further. “We have high expectations of him, which is why we retained him. But he is coming back into some form. He was really out of form. He’s made improvements, but it’s still not to where we or he would like. So there’s some room for him to get some form and get some confidence. But he’s just at that crossroads where batsmen are playing him better.” In his last 10 IPL matches he managed 10 wickets, and went wicketless in five contest. “They’ve seen more of him. So now he just has to drill down on what he needs to do to be as effective as what he’s been for the first part of his career. It’s a unique skill set, but it’s been a little bit off,” he said.  (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) CSK equal embarrassing IPL record with loss against RR | Cricket News

Chennai Super Kings Chennai Super Kings’ tough campaign in IPL 2025 hit another low on Tuesday evening in Delhi, as they suffered their 10th defeat of the season equalling their worst-ever record for most losses in a single edition. This unwanted statistic brings back memories of 2022, when CSK had also endured a 10-loss season. The other two instances of CSK losing eight matches in a season came in 2012 and 2020, both of which had still seen the side remain competitive. However, the 2025 campaign has been a far cry from those. This year, Chennai have looked out of sorts with both bat and ball. Injuries, inconsistency, and lack of firepower in key moments have all contributed to their decline. The side has struggled to find momentum, and their playoff hopes had already been dashed well before the final week of league matches.Quiz: Who’s that IPL player? With one game left to play against Gujarat Titans. CSK not only face the prospect of setting an outright record for most defeats in a season, but also risk finishing last on the points table. To avoid that, they need a big win against the table-toppers, as their net run rate is significantly worse than that of Rajasthan Royals, who ended their season on a high. What went wrong with CSK in IPL 2025 Whether Chennai manage to salvage pride in their final outing remains to be seen. For now, they are staring at the possibility of their most disappointing season in IPL history. Joginder Sharma drops massive statement on Dhonis IPL future

Joginder Sharma drops massive statement on Dhonis IPL future

Diu (Daman and Diu) [India], May 20 (ANI): Former India cricketer and the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning star Joginder Sharma feels it is time for Chennai Super Kings icon MS Dhoni to “rest”. Chennai, a team that boasts five title wins and 12 playoff appearances, was chasing the shadows of its former self as it crashed out of the playoff race in the group stage. After designated captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament, Dhoni took the mantle of leading the beleaguered CSK. Speculations have been going around about Dhoni’s future in the cash-rich Indian Premier League after the five-time champions crashed out of the race to the playoffs following a shambolic campaign in the 18th season. Rumours about Dhoni’s retirement sparked when his family came to Chepauk last month for Chennai’s fixture against Delhi Capitals. The 43-year-old’s coming down in the batting order fuelled the rumour mill, especially after Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that Dhoni can’t bat for “10 overs running full stick.” Joginder, who was Dhoni’s final over masterstroke against Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup, believes it is time for the veteran wicketkeeper to bid adieu to his 18-year-long journey in the cash-rich league. “Considering Mahi’s fitness level, he should play up to prove his fitness, but I believe it is time for him to rest,” Joginder told ANI. Dhoni addressed his retirement plans after his finishing touches helped Chennai trounce the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders earlier this month. He acknowledged that he would have to see if his body could take pressure in the next six to eight months. “After this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another 6-8 months to see if my body can take this pressure. Nothing to decide now, but the love and affection I have seen is excellent,” he said in the post-match presentation. With his brute force and lightning-quick reflexes with the gloves, Dhoni toppled several records in the 18th season, including featuring in 400 T20s, becoming the oldest player to be adjudged the Player of the Match, securing most wins as a captain and many more. During CSK’s IPL 2023 triumph, Dhoni didn’t miss a single match. He led the team from the front and ensured that his troops walked away with their fifth IPL title at the end of the tournament. Months later, the former Indian skipper underwent knee surgery at the beginning of this month to overcome the issue he carried for most of the season. (ANI) Source link
