PBKS hope to reap home advantage despite Kohli in rival camp

Chandigarh: Like any other team in the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings should be happy to be playing Qualifier 1 at home in Mullanpur. Local conditions do matter, and though PBKS have two wins and losses each in Mullanpur, the team management will be happy playing here. Punjab Kings, who will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 on Thursday, have reached the IPL playoffs after 11 years. (PTI) Unless of course the Virat Kohli factor comes into play and the Punjab fans come dressed in RCB shirts and cheer for Kohli. PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh is conscious of that possibility as he appealed to the Punjab fans to support the home team on Thursday. The PBKS-RCB game in Mullanpur last month saw spectators vocally supporting RCB and Virat. Some even jeered a few PBKS players and their families. PBKS have reached the playoffs after 11 years. They will be playing in Mullanpur after 38 days and would want a pitch with extra bounce which their tall fast bowlers can exploit. They have had a great momentum throughout the tournament with the Shreyas Iyer-Ricky Ponting partnership lifting a franchise that had struggled in the last decade. Ponting though says the job is only half done. Speaking to the broadcaster after Monday’s win over Mumbai Indians in the last league game, Ponting said, “We have not achieved anything yet” with the “big games” still to come. “A lot of hard work goes into being able to achieve something like this as a team. It is pretty obvious that this is a really talented team that are all on the same page. It’s a great achievement till now, but really, if you look back, we’ve not achieved anything yet. That’s the one thing I have been saying to the players since the moment we qualified.” Ponting and Shreyas renewed their partnership in PBKS this season having worked together in Delhi Capitals and it has clicked. “The vision for me was always to finish in the top two, and we have got there now. It is a really happy group and we have enjoyed our time in each other’s company for the last ten weeks, but we have got another week to go,” said Ponting with an eye on winning a maiden IPL trophy. This could be the best chance for PBKS considering their performances with domestic cricketers making a mark. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and rookie Priyansh Arya have laid the platform for Iyer and Josh Inglis to build on. Shashank Singh continues to improve as a finisher, while Marcus Stoinis and Nehal Wadhera too have provided batting depth. The bowling has been dealt a blow with the departure of South Africa fast bowler Marco Jansen – he took 16 wickets, complementing Arshdeep (18). Jansen has left for national duty with the Proteas playing Australia in the World Test Championship final from June 11. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who missed the last two games due to a finger injury, is expected to return and team up with the accurate Harpreet Brar. It was Chahal’s four-wicket haul which helped PBKS beat KKR in a low-scoring game in Mullanpur. However, Iyer’s captaincy has provided stability in the team, the India batter delivering after being bought for a whopping ₹26.75 crore. “If you speak to the players individually, Shreyas has spent a lot of time with them. He has pumped them up, given them a pat on the back when they needed it, and given them a kick in the pants when they’ve needed it as well. That is a sign of a good and strong leader,” Ponting said. PBKS has had 16 captains before Iyer took over, and they will hope the man who led KKR to last year’s title will repeat it with them. A defeat won’t be the end of the road. The losers will play in Qualifier 2, against the winner of the Eliminator. RCB come off an impressive final league win on Tuesday against Lucknow Super Giants with Jitesh Sharma finding his touch like the other batters after his brilliant, unbeaten 85 off 33 balls. Why Rajat Patidar Was Fined More Than Pat Cummins in IPL 2025: Full Breakdown

Why Rajat Patidar Was Fined More Than Pat Cummins in IPL 2025: Full Breakdown

Rajat Patidar Fined More Than Pat Cummins for IPL Slow Over-Rate: Here’s Why? In a recent turn of events during IPL 2025, fans were left puzzled as Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s interim captain Rajat Patidar received a steeper fine compared to Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Pat Cummins, despite both teams being penalized for the same offense — slow over-rate. But why was Patidar fined ₹24 lakh while Cummins got away with ₹12 lakh? Here’s the full explanation. The Offense: Slow Over-Rate in IPL The IPL Code of Conduct has strict guidelines regarding over-rates to ensure matches run on time. Teams are expected to bowl their 20 overs within the stipulated 90 minutes. Any delay without valid justification results in fines, and in repeat cases, suspensions. First-Time vs Repeat Offender Under IPL regulations: Thus, Patidar’s heavier penalty was a result of the team’s repeated breach of over-rate rules, not a harsher ruling against him individually. The Bigger Picture IPL 2025 has seen a strong push to enforce match timings strictly. With tight broadcast schedules and audience engagement at stake, the BCCI has shown zero tolerance for delays. Captains, especially stand-ins like Patidar, carry the burden of leading from the front and ensuring tactical decisions do not eat into game time. It also emphasizes that the IPL holds teams accountable, not just individual leaders. Conclusion While both Cummins and Patidar were guilty of slow over-rates, the fines reflect their teams’ compliance history rather than favoritism or inconsistency in penalties. This incident serves as a reminder to all teams: every over, every minute, and every decision counts. Read more…

IPL 2025: Ishan Kishan and Pat Cummins dent RCB’s top-two hopes | Cricket News

Ishan Kishan’s impressive 94 from 48 paved the way for victory for SRH vs RCB (Image via PTI) Sunrisers Hyderabad took to the pitch on Friday knowing well that a win will not change their standing in the table. The game however, had the potential to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru solidify their claim to booking a top-two spot ahead of the playoffs.Travis Head and Abhshek Sharma opened the game for SRH, although the RCB bowling attack took their wickets before either of them could put up a dangerous score on the board.Travis Head was dismissed for 17 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Abhishek Sharma fell at 34 thanks, after being caught by Phil Salt from a Lungi Ngidi delivery. While RCB mustered confidence from their dismissals, along came Ishan Kishan to spoil the party. A man down, Kishan did spectacularly well, as he dispatched boundary after boundary in the balls that followed.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!His tailblazing 94 from just 48 deliveries changed the game for Sunrisers as they put up a massive 231 runs on the board. Besides Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verman put up brilliant cameos, adding another 50 runs in just 22 balls for SRH. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhinav Manohar and Pat Cummins also featured for SRH at the crease as they put up a total RCB had never chased before in the IPL. 232 from 120 deliveries was 206/1 against the Gujarat Titans in 2024. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep 5: Shane Watson on how IPL gave him a lifeline & his tribute to Phil Hughes RCB took to the crease with Virat Kohli and Phil Salt opening the chase. While Kohli showed intent early on with his boundaries, he was dismissed while at 43 by Harsh Dubey. His opening partner Phil Salt marhed on for a bit more, racking up 62 runs in 32 deliveries. Poll Who was the standout player for Sunrisers Hyderabad in their match against RCB? However, his dismissal by Pat Cummins, followed by the successive wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma marked the starting of RCB’s collapse. What followed was Bengaluru wickets falling like dominoes; not a single player that came in afterwards stood at the crease for more than 6 balls. With victory in sight, SRH bowlers showed no mercy to RCB.Who’s that IPL player? The Jitesh Sharma led squad was bowled out at 189, earning SRH victory by 42 runs. The win does not affect SRH’s position in the points table. They remain in 8th spot with 11 points, below Kolkata Knight Riders who have 12 in 13. As for RCB, their net run rate took a massive dive to +0.255, pushing them below Punjab Kings. Prior to the game on Friday, RCB were second, and a win would have put them closer to a top-two finish. Now, a win for PBKS and Mumbai Indians, who have 17 and 16 points respectively, will push them even more behind in the race for top-two. “Fitting That We Are Bottom”: CSK Coach Stephen Fleming Spares No One At Press Conference

“Fitting That We Are Bottom”: CSK Coach Stephen Fleming Spares No One At Press Conference

In a candid admission of their pathetic run this IPL season, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming said they deserve to finish at the bottom of the table but promised to come back with “strong ideas”. One of the most consistent sides in the popular league, five-time champions CSK are set to finish last behind Rajasthan Royals to whom they lost by six wickets on Tuesday in their penultimate IPL clash this season. It is not a sight cricket fans are used to considering CSK’s tremendous success in the past. “No, we don’t obviously like being down here, but it’s not a motivation. We wanted just a good performance. We’re trying to string some performances together. The aim was two good performances (in last two matches). “Now it’ll be one good one to finish. It’s probably fitting that we’re at the bottom. We’ve played that type of cricket, so you can’t hide away from it,” Fleming said after the match. The New Zealander said they know the road ahead and failure of top-order batters has played huge role in the ordinary run. “Our order is not right at this stage, and that is something that we are always looking to reshuffle. We’ve got some strong ideas for next year, so all those facets are covered. But that hasn’t been possible this year because of the lack of runs at the top. “A lot of the batting positions are determined by how well a start we have, and then guys can fall into line. We haven’t had that. So we’ve been just patching innings up, really, rather than constructing good innings,” he explained the reason behind the wretched run. Pacer Anshul Kamboj has managed to impress this season with his pace and Fleming feels he will be a good asset for India after his selection in A side for the England tour. “His speeds have been around 138, 139 (kph). He is deceptive and the ball always seems to hit the gloves harder. His big strength is his length and he just gets the ball to wobble. You saw that today on a reasonably flat wicket and he’ll do well on that tour (of England) if he gets conditions that seam a bit and a little bit of swing. “He’ll be an absolute handful. He has got some real potential with both white and red ball. We’re happy with his development and the opportunity he has taken this year.” The former Kiwi captain also spoke highly of pacer Matheesha Pathirana but said the Lankan needs to improve further. “We have high expectations of him, which is why we retained him. But he is coming back into some form. He was really out of form. He’s made improvements, but it’s still not to where we or he would like. So there’s some room for him to get some form and get some confidence. But he’s just at that crossroads where batsmen are playing him better.” In his last 10 IPL matches he managed 10 wickets, and went wicketless in five contest. “They’ve seen more of him. So now he just has to drill down on what he needs to do to be as effective as what he’s been for the first part of his career. It’s a unique skill set, but it’s been a little bit off,” he said.  (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) LSG focussed to win last 3 games and somehow sneak into playoffs: William O’Rourke

Lucknow Super Gianst (LSG) fast bowler Willaim O’ Rourke has revealed that the team is just focusing to win the last three matches and somehow get a chance to make it to the playoffs. LSG are set to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday, May 18 at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The Rishabh Pant-led side are in a must-win situation as they desperately need to win all of their last three fixtures by a good margin to stay alive in the playoffs race. Ahead of the fixture, William O’ Rourke, who’s been signed as the replacement for Mayank Yadav for Rs 3 crore, spoke about his team’s playoff chances . “Obviously, there’s only so much that’s in our control, but what we can do is focus on winning the next three games. We need to take responsibility for that, put in strong performances, and if we manage to sneak into the semifinals, that would be a great result,” said O’Rourke in the pre-match press conference. Lucknow are on the seventh spot on the points table with five wins from 11 matches having ten points to their name. They have their last three matches against SRH, Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Moreover, their poor net run rate of -0.469 has further made their road to the playoffs tougher as all the other teams have a positive net run rate. The Rishabh Pant-led side will have to play out of their skin in the last three fixtures and also hope for certain results to go in their favour. Meanwhile, O’ Rourke also spoke about bowling on Indian pitches against some of the best players in the world. “Yeah, it’s obviously very different from back home. I think we tend to get greener, bouncier wickets there. I’ve played here a few times, including a couple of Test matches, which were definitely challenging—especially as a bowler. But at the same time, it’s exciting to experience different conditions and test my game against some of the best in the world,” he added. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! “Depicting CSK Were In Jail For Two Years…”: Ex-RCB Star Slams Ugly Fan War

“Depicting CSK Were In Jail For Two Years…”: Ex-RCB Star Slams Ugly Fan War

Ahead of the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL), former India batter Robin Uthappa has bashed the ugly fan war between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) supporters. Over the past few seasons, the banter between CSK and RCB fans has become ugly at times, with both sets of supporters firing ugly jibes at each other. Even the matches between the two sides have led to a few heated moments. While CSK have enjoyed historical success, RCB have had the edge over them in the last two seasons, winning three out of four contests. Days before the suspension of the IPL, RCB edged out CSK in a thriller to bolster their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. Prior to the match, RCB fans were seen selling ‘CSK jail’ jerseys, mocking them over the two seasons they were banned from the IPL (2016 and 2017). However, Uthappa, who represented both the franchises during his IPL career, wasn’t impressed with the RCB fans holding up white T-shirts with black strips to mock CSK supporters. “It was pretty intense, Outside the stadium, they were mocking the team, the players of the team when the bus was leaving, that was one thing that I saw, which I thought was in bad taste. The other one that I saw were the fans fighting with each other. I saw women being heckled, which felt unsavory, to be very honest. We saw that even in Chennai last year, again, uncalled for. It’s not on whatsoever,” said Uthappa on his YouTube channel. “It has gotten pretty intense. They are holding up jerseys, white T-shirts marked with black lines, stating the two years that CSK were banned for. They have kind of written MS’ number on it, and Thala under it, depicting that they were in jail for two years, or whatever. It’s getting a little beyond sport which concerns me. Because at the end of the day, this is a sport,” he added. RCB need a win from their remaining three matches to qualify for the playoffs, while CSK are already out of the top four race.
